MEC Celebrates Earth Month with Progress, Partnerships, and Community
MEC is diving headfirst into Earth Month with a focus on transparency, community events, and exciting partnerships. While they share their achievements in reducing their environmental footprint, they also acknowledge areas for improvement.
Transparency and Progress on Sustainability Goals
MEC’s full sustainability report arrives in August, but they’re offering a sneak peek at their Climate Action Plan. They’ve increased the use of recycled materials in their MEC Label products, particularly recycled nylon and polyester. While they didn’t quite meet their 2023 goals, they remain committed to reaching 100% recycled nylon and polyester by 2030. Look for garments like the MEC Fireside Fleece Snap Pullover and the MEC Aquanantor Rain Jacket, made with recycled materials.
Get Involved: Workshops, Events, and Giving Back
MEC is passionate about creating a community of environmentally conscious outdoor enthusiasts. Throughout April, they’re hosting a variety of in-store clinics and workshops:
Learn gear repair, essential outdoor skills like campfire cooking and bear safety and awareness.
Upcycle old materials into a bike bag or chalk bag at a community workshop.
MEC has also partnered with inspiring organizations for Earth Month:
Smartwool Second Cut Program: Recycle your old socks (any brand, material, or condition) at MEC for a new life.
Sterling Rope Recycling Program: Breathe new life into used climbing ropes through MEC’s ongoing partnership.
MEC x Edelrid presents Tommy Caldwell Talks: Ride for the Planet: Join Tommy Caldwell for climbing stories, prizes, and a chance to climb with him! Proceeds go towards protecting climbing areas.
Edelrid Giveback: MEC and Edelrid will donate $1 (up to $2,000) from each Edelrid product sold in April to Protect Our Winters Canada.
By combining transparency about its goals, educational events, and partnerships with purpose, MEC is empowering its community to make a difference this Earth Month.
