Chevrolet’s Electric Surge: The 2025 Equinox EV Leads the Charge

2024 was a significant year for Chevrolet in Canada. With record-breaking sales contributing to GM’s market leadership for the second consecutive year, it’s clear that Canadians are responding positively to the brand’s diverse offerings. From traditional gas-powered vehicles to an expanding electric lineup, Chevrolet is aiming to meet a wide array of customer needs. Notably, the Equinox EV, despite launching in May, secured the #3 spot in overall EV registrations for the year, and even reached the top spot in Q4. This performance underscores the model’s appeal and its role in Chevrolet’s EV strategy.
To delve deeper into this success and understand Chevrolet’s vision for the future, I had the opportunity to speak with James Hodge, Brand Director at Chevrolet Canada. Here’s what he shared:
The Equinox EV’s Resonance with Canadian Buyers
When asked about the Equinox EV’s strong performance, Hodge highlighted the vehicle’s competitive pricing and impressive range. “The Chevrolet Equinox EV resonated strongly with Canadian buyers for several key reasons. At a starting price of $44,999, it’s Canada’s most affordable electric vehicle with up to 513km of range, which addresses two major barriers—price and range. It provides the confidence Canadians need for both daily commutes and longer trips. Also, the Equinox EV is packed with advanced features like Google built-in for easy access to navigation, music, and apps, and available Super Cruise for hands-free driving, making it a highly connected and convenient option. These qualities, combined with its affordability and cutting-edge technology, clearly struck a chord with Canadian buyers.”
Building on EV Momentum in 2025
With Chevrolet ranking as the #2 EV brand in Canada, the focus is on sustained growth. Hodge pointed to British Columbia as a key market. “Chevrolet sees a great opportunity for EV growth in BC, where nearly 1 in 5 vehicles sold is an electric vehicle. Our strong lineup includes the Chevrolet Equinox EV, Blazer EV, Silverado EV, and BrightDrop commercial van, with the all-new Chevrolet Bolt EV being revealed later this year to offer even more choice and meet BC’s growing demand for EV options.”
Customer Expectations and Future Offerings
Understanding customer needs is paramount. Hodge explained that Canadians are looking for increased choice and innovation. “Canadian customers are telling us they want more choices and greater innovation. They’re looking for options that fit a variety of lifestyles and needs, whether that’s a powerful truck, a family SUV, or a cutting-edge electric vehicle. Customers want vehicles that offer top-notch performance, technology, and value, and they’re eager for more electric options with improved range and performance.”
Chevrolet’s response includes continued expansion of its EV lineup, with the upcoming Bolt EV, and ongoing improvements in range, performance, and technology. The brand is also focused on enhancing its dealer network and ensuring every vehicle delivers value.
